Daily Bible Readings Lent - Easter Year C

The Scripture readings below are from the Revised Common Lectionary, which is a reading guide used by many denominations within the Christian Church. The lectionary is a system of reading the Bible that will take the reader on a journey God's redemptive work in history through Jesus Christ. There are three reading cycles: Year A, Year B, and Year C. We are currently in Year C.

I invite you to join me on journey through scripture as we live through the days of Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. The scriptures contained in this chart will guide you as you allow the Holy Spirit to examine you in preparation for celebrating Easter. Everyone enjoys a celebration. However, let us not rush straight to Easter without first experiencing the journey. Our Lord has so much he wants to share with us. In many ways, we are like the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24). Jesus walks with us every day and we do not recognize him. Eventually, he does reveal himself as he did for those disciples as he broke bread during the evening meal. Jesus wants to travel with you to Easter. Will you travel with him?

There are typically three readings for each, except for Sunday, which has four. I recommend pausing three times each day to read a scripture and pray. The readings from the Psalms are great passages to begin the day, so these make wonderful readings for morning prayer. Read the Old Testament passages at midday for the noon prayer and read either the New Testament or Gospel passage in the evening for night prayers. The reason I recommend this rather than reading them all at one time is that you practice being in the presence of God throughout the day. A simple, yet effective pattern to follow is below.

  • Begin your time with Jesus in silence. Sit quietly for a couple of minutes or longer. As you begin to pray, ask him to quiet your mind so you can hear him. One thing that I have found helpful is to have a pencil and paper handy and to write down the things I need to do so I can forget about them until after my time with the Lord.
  • Before you begin reading the passage of scripture, pray. Ask the Lord to speak to you through the Scripture. This is not the time to pray for everyone on your prayer list. That time will come later.
  • Read the passage of scripture. Write down anything that catches your attention. Read the passage again watching and listening for the Lord to speak through his word.
  • As you come to the end of your time with the Lord, pray those on your prayer list.

The readings for Thursday - Saturday will assist you in preparation for Sunday and the readings for Monday - Wednesday will help you reflect on the readings from Sunday. I will be preaching from one or more of the readings for Sunday. I look forward to the opportunities we will have for conversation about our journey to Easter.
